Tips from a Mom – 10 Baby Essentials
Hi everyone, I’m a mother to Elsie, four, and to my little six months old daughter Rose. Rose was born at home (to be precise on the bathmat) after a quick, natural labor. I’d love to tell some of the baby care tips that will make life easier. I learnt this from my own experience on taking care of my youngest baby Rose. I would also like to tell some of the waste things that would consume time and money from my maternity life during these days.
There will be some people who disagree with my kind of choices and my tips and those who want to do some of the things on their own style and way. If you have any suggestions please scroll to the parents comment section of this site and post your views. You are most welcome to post some of your suggestions on must have baby care equipments and all other kinds of stuff.
1. First and foremost requirement
The most important thing that helped me with my baby care all throughout thus six months is my Huggababy sling. This is similar to the one which is worn by the patients with broken arm. One difference is that this is a bit bigger in size. One great advantage in this is that when Rose is sleeping I could carry her with this sling and hence could do all other work also by keeping an eye on Rose. Some of the works that I usually do is that picking up my elder kids from nursery and after I return I can lay her back in the bed. There are no straps which could cause discomfort to the babies during sleep. But now she is old enough to sit on her own and to enjoy watching this world. There are many more details given about huggababy in the following site: www.huggababy.co.uk
2. Cozy sleep
My husband gave me the idea of a Moses basket in which Rose slept after a week from her birth. the bed is warm, cozy and well secure for a week old baby and you could have it right next to your bed thereby making night feeds easier.
3. Bed spread for baby’s comfort
Baby sheepskin is best for baby’s laying cover. This can be spread over the sofa and Rose used to sleep there during the day. I used to check the surface if it’s clean before I lay down Rose. This can be cleaned by washing machines also. There are lot more information on: www.huggababy.co.uk. (Making the babies to sleep on the sheep skin could increase the risk of cot death.)
4. Long nails problem
There are many cases where the first baby are born with long nails. You should be careful especially is you are pregnant for the first time. The nails of these babies also seem to grow a bit quick. This might cause some scratches on themselves. The tiny nail clippers have helped me to reduce these things.
5. Entertain your baby
Bouncing cradle could make your life easier especially during the times when babies start to wriggle. There are actually two rollers through which a fabric is passed through. These gently bounce as and when your babies kick them. Rose loves to watch the world around her by sitting in it. This acts as a convenient place to feed her till she is old enough to sit in tall chairs.
6. Easy cooking
I just love my Braun hand-held food processor. This helps me to cook tiny amounts of food and this is also very easy to clean. (Potatoes can not be cooked with this food processor, because this makes them into wallpaper paste. You can use fork and mash them).
7. Comfort bras
During marathon two hour feed to your babies could make the bosoms to expand and deflate depending if they are empty of full. Most of the first time moms might have noticed this phenomenon. This is because they are not trained to breastfeed. The deflation is caused due to two hours continuous marathon breastfeeding and the full sensation would come if your baby is in sleep and your breast is full of milk and they give a feeling of exploding. This can be solved by using Bravado nursing bras which are made of soft, stretchy cotton which accommodates your breasts. There are many designs of them available. Of all the designs I like my rock-chick leopard-skin design. You could contact the following site to buy them. www.bloomingmarvellous.co.uk
8. Comfort underwear
Disposable knickers could help you with the lot of bleeding that usually occurs after giving birth to a baby. This is a suggestion after a practically experiencing it. The soft, airy nature and varying sizes are some of its advantages.
8. Mopping baby mess
Muslin squares is very vital to all the babies. They are ideal for mopping up messes from both ends as they are highly absorbent in nature. This can also be used to reduce the chilly feeling when they are put over the baby’s changing mat or you can wear them as a kind of “sick guard”. They are used as emergency bibs or nappies also.
9. Protect your baby’s feet
The only socks that will stay on the baby’s feet to keep them warm are the Baby Gap socks, this protects your baby from being infected due to the germs that are in his feet which they normally play with at around four months. Pure cotton does not cause them by being lurking under the sofa covered from fluff.
10. Cushion during feeding.
This helps you during breastfeeding as you can raise the baby to the right height from your lap for breastfeeding. This also can support your back while lounging in bed. One of the great advantages in this is that you can use this even if your baby gets old.
10 things I wouldn’t recommend
1. A bulky travel system
A bulky travel system is not required at all.
2. Three-wheeler buggies
you do not require them unless if you are not in the out skirts of the country.
3. Baby vests with ties on
This sleeveless garment will only help your child in finding another blame reason to cry which will eventually force you to pull the garment off from your child’s body. But if this garment comes with poppers then your child will be very good in this nicely tucked-in costume.
3. Playnest
Playnest , you will comprehend them differently from your child would do. You may think that playnest will provide your child a good cushion to sit on but the child would rather find it difficult to cope up with the playnest.
4. Baby shoes
Good looking shoes in fact but the problem is that they won’t stay on for long.
5. Handheld breast pump
The modern day science and technology has offered us a chance even to mimic the feeding action of a mother and this is done by a handheld breast pump is available in the market for a reasonable price. This will make sure that you do not waste hours of time feeding your child.
6. Changing table
It will be a simpler job for us to swap the mat rather than the whole table set up.
7. Antibacterial anything
As the skin of the child is so soft, it is recommended not to apply any anti bacterial lotion. Playing games will be of a good exercise.
8. Baby bath, baby lotion, baby oil…
We should not tamper much with the soft skin of the child, so should not use any such lotions like sun screens.
9. Steam sterilisers
Steam sterilizers are more effective and safer to use.
10. Hairbands with bows for baby girls
Hairbands restricts the growth of the hair so we shall ignore using hairbands for certain period of time.
